Scagliola

Scagliola is the centuries old art of imitating marble through plaster.  The height of scagliola’s popularity in America ranged from the 1800’s through the 1930’s when elaborately decorated churches, state capitals and theaters were built.  Many of the interior walls and columns in these historic buildings you assumed were marble, are actually scagliola.  Using different plasters, natural pigments and veining techniques, a nearly unlimited range of colors and patterns not available in natural marble can be achieved.
